In short: A connection recorded as not matching the engineering on an Austral frame.

Why this one is different

Nearly every defect argument turns on tolerance, and tolerance arguments take months. This is a comparison: the drawing sets out an arrangement of members, brackets and bolts, and the frame either has it or it does not.

What was recorded

Connection is not matching with engineering, at high severity, at a timber external beam or lintel on an Austral frame inspection.

The usual cause

A member that did not arrive, or a bracket substituted because it was on the truck. Neither is dishonest and both are undocumented, which is the problem.

The proper resolution

An alternative detail confirmed in writing by the engineer who drew the original. That closes it. A supervisor saying it is equivalent does not.

What an investigation adds

It takes the single item, records the built condition and the drawn condition side by side, and states the difference, so nobody has to argue about adjectives.

FAQ

Questions Catherine Field owners ask about this

Do you say whether it is safe?

No. We record the difference and say when an engineer is required to judge its consequence. That line is important and we do not cross it.

Does an investigation take longer?

Narrower and deeper than a stage visit, with the report following in a few business days rather than the same evening.

Can this be found after lining?

Only by opening the wall, which is why the frame stage is the whole argument.

What should I send across?

The contract, your engineering, any earlier reports, and the correspondence you have had with the builder.
